6 Private Treatment Rooms

Maya Dental in South Edmonton Common (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) reimagines the dental clinic as a space of serenity and sensory balance. Drawing inspiration from Kyoto and the understated harmony of Japandi design, the 250-square-metre clinic blurs the boundaries between healthcare, hospitality, and wellness environments. The layout comprises of six dental treatment rooms, a spacious reception, waiting area, and a private consultation suite—each organized to encourage a sense of calm, privacy, and openness.

Materiality and craftsmanship anchor the design narrative. A custom feature wall, created in collaboration with Quinspired, incorporates handcrafted ceramic plates painted with a simplistic motif as an homage to the tradition of Japanese pottery. Medium-toned warm woods, reminiscent of Japanese cedar, envelop the interior with natural texture and warmth, fostering a tactile connection to nature. Shoji screens articulate spatial boundaries between private spaces and public spaces, while offering light permeability. Their translucent surfaces diffuse light, allowing illumination to move gently through the space and creating an ever-shifting play of shadow and glow, private and public.

The result is a meditative environment where design, craft, and care intersect—transforming the act of dental treatment into an experience of wellness and quiet contemplation. An environment where the experience is primary and treatment is a close second.
