THE SEDATION STUDIO AT WAYSIDE DENTAL

Lloydminster, AB

3 Private Treatment Rooms

What do you think about when you think of a sedation studio at a dental clinic? Perhaps something simple and perhaps sterile? For Dr. Jamal, our Client with a big personality, anything but the norm is what they wanted to achieve.

As a 961 square foot expansion to an existing practice, the expansion was specifically being built for sedation procedures. The upfront request was for a separate entrance and waiting area with three dedicated, private sedation suites and a connection to the existing Clinic.

Our first meeting with Dr. Jamal in person would turn out to be the culminating moment for this project. He reminded us of Canadian hip-hop superstar Drake. He has an online presence in terms of dental sedation education with their own YouTube channel. After we got to know them, we joked that that perhaps the Clinic should be designed to be a Clinic that Drake himself would work in if he were a dentist. Thus, Drake’s dental clinic was created.

For the design, we wanted to create a dramatic environment. A clinic that felt like a lounge or night-club, a place where when sedated, would feel calm and soothing by design.

The overall aesthetic included black framed smoked glass to provide an airier space yet private due to the smoked glass. To help create the lounge effect, most walls in public areas were dark paint with black base, and grey concrete look vinyl flooring. To help connect the entire space, a forty-foot-long linear slat feature continues from reception to the rear of the sedation area. To help create the feeling of a lounge, three Samsung Frame TVs are located in the reception area which display various forms of street art, while further down the corridor into the sedation area three custom x-ray poster boxes with full panoramic x-rays are mounted on the wall to play homage to the original days of x-ray versus the current digital technology.

Each sedation room is outfitted with four types of lighting to help with the correct functional lighting, but ultimately helping to provide a relaxing environment. The lighting includes the dental operating light, overhead LED lights in the acoustic ceiling system, concealed dimmable LED cove lighting around the perimeter above the acoustical ceiling as well as under-cabinet LED lighting at the custom millwork dental cabinets.

To help pull the entire theme together, terminating the end of the corridor and very appropriately spelled out is the quote from Notorious B.I.G. “It was all a dream.”
