Bold Design's Top 5 Designer Gifts for 2019

December 10, 2019

It's that time of year. The time to bundle up.  The time to think of that warm vacation.  The time to get something unique, something different, something inspiring for someone in your life.  Whether it be a loved one, a colleague or that Client who helped make it a special year, here is BOLD DESIGN'S TOP 5 DESIGNER GIFTS FOR 2019.

1 - Miir Tumbler - starting at $15.95USD

Simple in form, highly functional, the Miir line of tumblers founded in Seattle unifies in-house design and social sustainability.  Their products are timeless, thoughtful, beautifully simple and sustainable.  A portion of each product sold is earmarked towards a social project in partnership with their giving partners.

While they offer a variety of reusable beverage containers, it is their Tumbler that caught our attention while at Intelligentsia in Venice Beach, CA.  Crafted of high-grade components, the simple design and gorgeous black or white finishes compliment any activity and car interior.  www.miir.com

2 - Secrid Mini Wallet - starting at $90.00CDN

Founded in Holland in 2009, Secrid has created a unique product helping solve daily Costanza wallet nightmares for many around the world.  Our favourite wallet, the Mini Wallet combines amazing leathers in various colours and embossed textures, RFID protection and a patented mechanism to eject 4-6 cards, this wallet has become a staple for the Bold Design team including spouses.  Sold through various retailers.  www.secrid.com

3 - Martha Sturdy - starting at $380.00USD
A Vancouver native, Martha Study is an internationally renowned artist whose "work is not for thinking about a specific environment, [but] about being witness to the emotive impact of nature's balanced composition.  Her connection with the Pacific Northwest has fostered a fundamental sensitivity towards the natural world, raw material explorations and formal expansiveness that is evident in her work.

As an Emily Carr University graduate, she was commissioned in 2010 for a permanent installation in the Vancouver Olympic Village; followed in 2012 by a permanent installation in the heart of downtown Tokyo, Japan. Martha is currently represented by Orie Gallery in Tokyo.

Some of our favourite works of hers are her resin sculptural bowls and trays.  Available in various sizes, shapes and colours, they are always the simplest form in a room but make an impact.  Whether full or empty they exude a simplistic design that is hard to find.  www.marthasturdy.com

4 - Autonomous Furniture Saxe Tables - starting at $850.00CDN
Located in Victoria, BC, Autonomous Furniture is led by former Edmonton native Kirk Van Ludwig.   Founded in 2013, the furniture design house is known for West Coast contemporary design.  Since 2016, their furniture designs have garnered much praise in Western Canada receiving Western Living's 2016 Designer of the Year's "One to Watch for Furniture", Western Living's 2018 and 2019 Finalist Furniture.  Selling directly and through various curated dealers, Autonomous' furniture offers a unique blend of materials.

Our favourite is the Saxe Table collection.  Done in solid walnut with the most amazing hexagon shaped brass legs, it blends just as well in a modern design concept as it does in a Mid-Mod concept.  Don't wait to get yours!  This is the perfect accent piece to put Santa's milk and cookies on!  www.autonomousfurniture.com

5 - Rocket Espresso Appartamento - starting at $2,100.00CDN

Hand-built in Milano, Italy, Rocket Espresso's Appartamento line of espresso machines is their entry-level machine.  But don't take that to mean that they are entry quality.  Based on their famed Giotto line, the Appartamento line was designed to fit into smaller environments yet providing for cafe quality coffee.

The Appartamento line includes a vibratory pump, heat exchanger boiler system and a pressure gauge. The defining feature of this line is the twelve circles cut into each side panel of the machine.  The side panels are available in either white or copper.  If your special one has been extra special this year, perhaps add their newest Faustino Grinder which also incorporates the same circle them on the side panels.  Rocket is sold through authorized dealers all throughout North America.  www.rocket-espressousa.com
